Artistic Vision
The lead artist of "Black Myth: Wukong," Yang Qi.

Black Myth: Wukong delivers a stunning visual experience by blending cutting-edge technology with the depth of traditional Chinese culture. Led by art director Yang Qi, the team focused on perfecting every detail, from intricate carvings on ancient architecture to the textures of ordinary objects, showcasing their meticulous craftsmanship.

To integrate the creativity of traditional culture and historical relics into the game, the team traveled across China, scanning and studying ancient landmarks. This approach preserves the beauty of these cultural treasures while allowing players to experience their grandeur in a virtual world. For example, the ancient temple seen during Wukong's battle with Kang Jinlong in the trailer is based on Dule Temple in Jixian, Tianjin—one of the few remaining relics of the Liao Dynasty.

Challenges in Art Creation

Recreating real-world historical scenes posed significant challenges:

Detailed Scanning: The first model of the Dazu Rock Carvings in Chongqing reached an astonishing 12 billion polygons, reflecting the sheer volume of work involved.
Preserving Timeworn Beauty: Many historical sites are heavily damaged by time. The art team sought to digitally preserve these structures, bringing their stories to life for players.
Months of Refinement:Each scanned model underwent months of processing and enhancement to achieve the level of perfection seen in the game.
Visual Design Highlights

Recreating real-world historical scenes posed significant challenges:

Character Design: Mythical characters like Sun Wukong balance realism and exaggerated mythical features, giving each character a unique personality.
Environmental Design: From the natural landscapes of Mount Huaguo to the detailed carvings of Buddhist temples, every setting is infused with cultural depth and historical authenticity.
Special Effects: Combat animations and spell effects combine power and elegance, fully reflecting the magic of Eastern mythology.
